The UDP leader, 73, spoke exclusively to the BBC where he insisted his condition is temporary.

“This just a temporary issue, it’s not a permanent future of my health situation and in any case I think I will be using my brain more than my feet in performing the functions of the office of president,” Mr Darboe said when asked if his health would permit him to be able to keep up with the demands of being a president.

Darboe has physically been absent from UDP’s rallies the whole of this week but he has been addressing his supporters remotely.

The presidential election is on Saturday and Darboe is one of six candidates contesting the election.
